In the development of Indian Theater, the Himachal theater has also its humble contribution. This is a region of high mountains where dance and music are a way of life for the people. Folk theater forms are akin to drama. They are "KARIYALA", "BANTHARA", and "BHAGAT" - all performed in open grounds and extremely popular.

The Gaiety Theater and Kalibari Hall are the venues in Shimla where non-professional groups perform plays. Assistance from the late Prithviraj Kapur was instrumental in the founding of the Himachal Theater. Later artists like Ramesh Gaur, Manoharsinh and Manmohan Sharma have advanced the theater movement. Through another drama group HEEMA KALA KENDRA artists such as Som Dutt Kaushik, Ram Dayal Sharma and Bhavani Dutt Shastri and others are actively engaged in the theatrical field today.
